Bridges or Barricades?
Bridges or Barricades? is a program in schools using theatre to address young peoples experiences of conflict. Rebus has just finished developing our first program creating interactive Forum Theatre performances with Year 9 and 10 drama students at Kingsford Smith School in Holt. The Year 9 and 10 students interviewed year 6 students in the same school about their experiences of conflict, and then created three Forum Theatre plays based on ideas from these interviews, and their own experiences. They then performed these plays for the Year 6 students, and the wider school community. The plays dealt with issues including girls fighting over a boy, harassment on social media, body image, bullying and discrimination. These performances then lead to powerful conversations about how to address these issues, and what young people and adults can both do differently to de-escalate conflict.
Bridges of Barricades? is based on the successful Cooling Conflicts and Acting Against Bullying models developed and evaluated in Queensland. It is directed by Rebus Theatre Artistic Director Robin Davidson and Associate Artist Ali Clinch. It has been developed in partnership with Multicultural Youth Services. We hope to continue this program in 2018, funding permitting. If your school would like to partner with Rebus in Bridges or Barricades? please contact us!
